SUMMARY

Big studios build new projects in Unreal.

Money still comes from mobile, and mobile still means Unity.

New indies start in Godot.

None of the three is losing.

Each found a different floor.

These are the facts behind that split.

  1. THE MARKET

GDC 2026 State of the Game Industry put Unreal ahead as the primary engine for the first time.

Unreal is primary for 42 percent of the 2,300-plus developers surveyed.

Unity is primary for 30 percent.

AAA studios drove the Unreal result, with 47 percent naming Unreal.

Established indie studios still run Unity at 54 percent.

At GMTK Game Jam 2026, Godot became the most used engine for the first time in nine years.

Godot made 47 percent of the jam games, about 4,900 entries.

Unity made 34 percent, about 3,600.

GameMaker made 5 percent, 498 entries.

Unreal made 3 percent, 319.

Unity had been the jam leader for the nine previous straight years.

Godot GMTK share by year: 16 percent in 2022, 19 in 2023, 37 in 2024, 39 in 2025, 47 in 2026.

Mobile is the money, at $121.1 billion of the $213.9 billion 2026 market.

  1. UNREAL

Unreal won new AAA projects because AAA studios chose it.

Epic laid out the roadmap at Unreal Fest in June 2026.

Unreal Engine 6 will merge UE5 and UEFN into a single unified engine.

Gameplay programming moves to Verse, Epic’s own language.

Epic says Blueprints and Actors will be deprecated once the new framework is mature.

Epic promises conversion tools for moving projects across.

UE5.8 is the last planned major release of UE5.

UE6 early access lands in late 2027.

glTF and USD become first-class formats.

UE5.8 ships an experimental MCP server for Claude, Gemini, and other models.

License: 5 percent royalty on gross revenue above $1 million per game per quarter.

Place: the engine you choose when fidelity and platform reach matter more than cost.

Alternatives: Unity, or in-house engines such as Frostbite, RE Engine, Decima, id Tech, and Source 2.

  1. UNITY

Unity is the most used engine by studio count, across the widest set of platforms.

GDC 2026: 30 percent primary share, and 54 percent among established indies.

Unity earns most of its money from mobile, the largest slice of the market.

Unity cancelled the per-install runtime fee in 2024 after the community backlash.

Unity 7 roadmap promises an update path that will not break your build.

Unity AI tools have been in beta since May 2026.

Unity retired the “Unity AI” brand and now names each tool by what it does.

The in-editor assistant is project-aware and can drive editor actions.

AI-generated assets carry embedded metadata marking them as AI-generated.

Place: the engine for teams shipping across mobile, desktop, and XR on a schedule.

Alternatives: Godot for the same jobs at zero license cost.

Unreal, if the project turns 3D-heavy and cinematic.

  1. GODOT

Godot is the open-source engine with an MIT license and no royalty.

Godot Foundation formalized its written vision for the engine in June 2026.

Godot is now the jam standard at 47 percent of GMTK 2026, and growing every year.

Current stable is 4.7.2, with 4.8 in dev snapshots as of late August 2026.

Godot re-released 3.6.3 as LTS for Android and iOS requirement changes.

The Foundation changed its contribution policies to cope with rapid growth.

GodotCon Boston 2026 covered official Foundation updates.

Place: solo developers, educators, and teams that want full control with no fees.

Alternatives: Unity, GameMaker, Defold for 2D, or Unreal for cinematic AAA tooling.

  1. GAMEMAKER

GameMaker is a subscription engine built for 2D platformers and pixel art.

GMTK 2026: 5 percent share, 498 entries.

Place: fast 2D prototypes for small teams that favor its workflow.

Alternatives: Godot, Defold, and Construct.

  1. COMPANY-ADMITTED TRUTHS

Epic admitted Blueprints and Actors cannot survive the next generation.

Epic admitted no single studio should own the whole loop.

Epic will open its systems as open specifications that any engine, tool, or studio can implement against.

Unity admitted the runtime fee broke enough trust to cancel it.

Unity admitted its AI tools need to be named by function, not by brand.

Unity promised a Unity 7 path that will not break your build.

Godot Foundation admitted governance needs a written vision.

Godot admitted contribution growth now needs policy.

  1. BOTTOM LINE

Unreal won the new big-budget projects.

Unity kept the studios that already ship, especially on mobile.

Godot won the people just starting.

GameMaker holds its small 2D floor.

Engine war is the wrong frame.

The market split into floors, and each engine owns one.
